After signing up you receive login information via email, then it's a simple matter of visiting the site of your Wordpress Dashboard, naming your site and choosing an appropriate theme. You can post new entries and sidebar links to your weblog using the dashboard, or via supplied bookmarklets that you drag from the dashboard to your Bookmarks Bar.
Wordpress.com weblogs are free, and there are no ads (except for a tiny text link to Wordpress and the bottom of each page).
If you want to tweak the CSS code of your weblog, add more sidebar widgets than those provided, or increase the allocated 50 megs of space available, you can upgrade your membership for a small fee.
