A Pretty Good Image Editor

I use ToyViewer to make the images that you see in this site. It's rather strange to use; I get the impression that it was ported from another platform, like NextStep. An example of the strangeness: when you modify an image the modified version appears in a totally new window. You don't undo in the normal sense. Instead you just close the newly made window and then try again.

So, if you make a lot of changes to an image you're going to end up with windows all over the place; no big deal if you remember that to close all windows in an app you need to hold the Option key when clicking the close button.

A typical scenario when adding an image to this site involves first, grabbing a screen selection by hitting Command-Control-Shift-4 and stretching a selection over the area I want captured. Then I open ToyViewer and Command-Shift-V to open the captured image. I then drag a rectangle in the image and move the sides to get the right dimensions and Command-Option-C to clip it.

Then it's Command-Shift-J to export it as a JPG.

I use ToyViewer for this job because:

  • It's free
  • It's fast, loading in a second instead of five to ten seconds for iPhoto or The Gimp
  • It supports Dock Dropping
