I get nervous whenever my hard drive gets more than half full. No matter what size it is to begin with. I know it's silly, but there you are...
WhatSize scans my Mac and tells me very quickly what's taking up space. After about three minutes it produces a list of my folders in order from biggest to smallest in size.

I can then burrow into the folders and discover the hogs. From there I can decide what I can safely trash and launch the folders in Finder, or delete them directly from WhatSize.

In my case the easiest way for me to shed megabytes was to chuck iDVD and Garageband (no DVD recorder and no talent).
I liberated about 6 gigs!
